Litter box cabinets: fit and cleaning access

A cabinet can surround a litter tray, but the tray must still be easy to take out. Start with the tray you plan to use and the way you clean it, rather than the cabinet’s outside size alone.

Check the inside and the route out

Measure the tray including its rim, lid and any handles. Compare those measurements with the usable interior, then check the doorway and the direction in which the tray must move to come out. A tray that fits inside may still be awkward to remove.

Leave room in front of the cabinet to open the doors and put the tray down while cleaning. Check the cat’s entrance separately. Storage, a scratching surface and a tabletop do not replace space for the tray.

Can I use the cabinet’s outside dimensions to choose a tray?

No. Panels, dividers and storage take up space. Use the stated interior or maximum tray dimensions. If a necessary measurement is missing, ask before ordering.
